What Are Peptides?

There are so many skincare buzzworthy ingredients: retinol, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid. One we’ve been seeing a lot recently of are peptides. From the way they are marketed, we can deduce that they’re good for our skin, but what even are they? And why are they in our products?

To truly understand what peptide are and how they work, we need to talk about amino acids. Amino acids are organic compounds that contribute to the development of protein that creates healthy skin, hair, muscles, and bones. Peptides are strings of amino acids and aid in the production of new collagen that makes skin firm, plump and elastic. Aside from being great for skin, peptides are essential in general bodily function, like enzyme production, hormones, and energy.

So why do we need to add more peptides via skincare? As you age, your body’s collagen production slows down, and while adding more peptides to your skin won’t necessarily add more peptides to your overall reserve, they do act as a messenger for the body to create more collagen. So when you add a skincare product with peptide to the skin on your face, these peptides signal to your body that it needs to produce more collagen in that area. It basically tricks the skin into thinking there is an injury, and your body works to repair it.

How can you get more peptides you ask? Opt for serums and moisturizer as opposed to cleansers, which wash off the skin not leaving behind many added peptides. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite products below!
