Introduce yourself to our readers! Who are you and what do you do?

Sure! I’m Katrine van Wyk - I’m a certified holistic health coach, wellness consultant, and writer. I both work one-on-one with clients, consult and write. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and my two kids, Felix, 5, and Freya, 21 months. I was born and raised in Norway and moved to NYC at 21 to try my luck here as a model, and to travel and explore - I never left…

How do you interpret self-care?

I think it’s so individual: what we all need to feel taken care of and well in our bodies and minds. So, the first step to self-care is getting to know yourself better–getting to know what you need, your likes and dislikes, and learning to say hell no to the stuff you don’t want, like, or need! Then you’ll have a little more time for whatever practices and love you need to give to yourself.


How do you do self-care?

I know that I feel my best when I get to move my body, get fresh air and eat some vegetables so I aim to include all that every day. With two young kids, it’s a lot about priorities for me and I just have had to get really clear on what’s most important to me right now. So, self care for me looks like eating breakfast every day, drinking coffee alone in a café, podcasts when cooking and cleaning, face masks (obviously!), baths when I feel tense and tight, yoga classes, date nights, a monthly visit to my chiropractor, short workouts at home, naps (!!!) and a membership to The Wing.

What's your current skincare routine? Has it evolved? How and why?

Oh yes, it has evolved! After either being pregnant or nursing for the last 6 years, I definitely feel like I’ve needed to look after my skin more. I take collagen, fish oil and probiotics daily, which are all great for the skin. I also face-mask more often now. I have been using mostly clean, organic and natural products (all these terms are a bit confusing in the skincare world!) for the last 15 years because I know how much crap can be hidden in beauty products and that our skin absorbs it all! I am also a lot more diligent about putting sunscreen on my face now. I use a tinted moisturizer with SPF from Beautycounter most days. Another product I’m really into is the Moon Juice Acid Potion and I use it most evenings–that stuff works! I have recently invested in a NuFace and so far I’m into it. I love a good face oil both morning and night. And I sleep with an overnight moisturizing mask from January Labs several nights a week during the winter. For makeup, I use a mix of RMS, W3ll People, Beautycounter, Kjaer Weis, Ilia, Kosås, etc.

Congrats on your newest book, Super Powders! What advice can you give to someone who is looking to add adaptogens into their daily routine?

Thank you! I say start with one thing and do it consistently for a month! The book can be helpful in figuring out which ones you might want to try, and the recipes are so fun to play around with. I usually recommend starting with ashwagandha, reishi or astragalus–these are tried and tested and beneficial for pretty much anyone! Add a 1/4 teaspoon to your latte or take them as capsules if you want. Because adaptogens work with the body and help it adapt to stress, these plants can be beneficial to a lot of different people in different situations.


You’re a holistic health coach, author, and mom. How do you balance your career and family with taking care of yourself?

Ha! I’m not quite sure. Well, I don’t work in a traditional job or a traditional way, and I don’t work “full time”. The one great benefit is that I have a lot of flexibility and I’m in charge of my own time! But sure, some days that means answering emails from my phone while cooking dinner, writing at night after the kids are in bed, or simply having to work on the back burner for a few weeks when a kid is home sick. I try to go with the flow and be efficient and effective with my work time when I have it. I also don’t compromise too much on some of my self-care needs like exercising and sleep. I need to get to bed early (between 10-11) and fit in some movement during nap time or go to a yoga class after school drop off. No one day is the same though and that suits me just fine!
